Bottoms touts $1.1M raised as Democrats gear up for 2026 governor’s race

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Wednesday she raised about $900,000 and loaned herself another $200,000 as she tries to establish herself as the Democratic front-runner in the race for Georgia governor.
That’s about the same total as her Democratic rival, state Sen. Jason Esteves, who said earlier this week he raised more than $1.1 million over a roughly two-month span since he entered the race April 21. His campaign said his total doesn’t include any loans.

Bottoms told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution she amassed nearly 7,100 donors over a shorter period — 41 days . She said she’ll report having $1 million in cash on hand when she files her disclosure within the next week.

Georgia candidates face a key test this week as they post their first financial disclosures covering contributions from April through June. While few voters are tuning in yet to the dueling campaigns, this period is crucial for candidates to build their political infrastructure, hone their messages and begin making appeals to grassroots activists and donors who help power their bids.

Democrats are seeking to flip the Governor’s Mansion for the first time in more than two decades.

Bottoms filed paperwork April 28 to begin raising money, though her aides said she raised the bulk of her cash after she formally entered the race three weeks later. She enjoys high name recognition thanks to her tenure as mayor and her role as a deputy to former President Joe Biden, and she earned national attention after announcing her candidacy.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Ten years ago, a man walked into the Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and shot 10 people. Nine died.

Now, three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kevin Sack has written a book about that fateful day and how it impacted not only the victims, their families, and the people of Charleston but how it also impacted him.

“I was a reporter with the New York Times at the time this all happened. And I went to Charleston in the immediate aftermath to cover both the shootings themselves and the events that followed, including the rather remarkable bond hearing for the shooter two days after, where family members stepped up to the microphone, one after the next, and offered expressions of forgiveness of one kind or other towards the killer.”

Sack’s book, “Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance, and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church,” was released to coincide with the shooting’s 10th anniversary. He now calls Charleston home so the book had more meaning to him than just telling an important story.

Sack will talk about his book and its historic relevance at a book signing Wednesday, June 25 at Senior Citizens Inc.’s Learning Center in Savannah. Roger Smith, the Learning Center’s director, tells News 3 why it is important to them to bring events like Sack’s book signing to SCI. “We here at the Learning Center and at Senior Citizens, Inc. strive every day and every season to secure the very best public presentations for our community.” So last year when a group from SCI visited Mother Emanuel AME Church and met Sack, Smith jumped at the chance to invite him to speak at The Learning Center.

+From boycott to ballgame: Baseball’s political All-Star Game saga returns to Georgia
MLB’s All-Star Game returns to Georgia, politics in tow

When MLB yanked the All-Star Game from Georgia four years ago to protest the state’s new election law, it was more than a scheduling change. It marked a turning point in a national debate over ballot access that had reached a boiling point.

Now, as the game returns to Atlanta for a five-day celebration culminating in baseball’s All-Star showcase, Republicans long exasperated by claims the law was an illegal “Jim Crow 2.0″ that made Georgia a laughingstock are instead claiming vindication.Gov. Brian Kemp and other Republicans used MLB’s decision to rally conservatives — and put Democrats on defense after metro Atlanta lost a premier event expected to generate tens of millions for the local economy.
